The new Texas Instruments TMS320F2807x microcontroller platform is part of the Piccolo family and is particularly suitable for digital control-based applications, including inverters, telecommunication rectifiers, server power supplies, renewable energy, automotive power supplies, and more. The F2807x is a 32-bit floating-point microcontroller based on TI's industry-leading C28x core. This kernel is enhanced by a trigonometric hardware accelerator, which improves the performance of trigonometric-based algorithms by sine, cosine, and arctangent functions based on CPU instructions, which are common in torque loop and position calculations. The F2807x devices also feature a real-time programmable control law accelerator (CLA), which offloads time-critical control loop functions, thereby increasing the bandwidth of the C28x main CPU to focus on other system tasks, such as communications and system diagnostics. The company says that with C28x CPUs and CLAs, designers can achieve overall system performance of up to 240 MIPS. Connect peripherals, such as dual ISO11898-1 (CAN 2.0B) interfaces and USB 2.0 ports with MAC and full-speed PHY, allowing users to add universal serial bus (USB) connections to their applications.
