Texas Instruments Low drop difference (LDO) low power linear voltage regulator

Technology Cover
Post-datum: 2023-04-15

The TPS791 device is a low-drop differential (LDO) low-power linear regulator with high power suppression ratio (PSRR), ultra-low noise, fast start, and excellent line and load transient response in a small-profile SOT23 package. The device is stable and has a small 1-μF ceramic capacitor on the output.

Pin Configuration

The TPS791 uses an advanced, proprietary BiCMOS manufacturing process that produces extremely low step-down (e.g. 38 mV at 100 mA, TPS79147). The device achieves fast startup times (about 63µs, 0.001 -- µF bypass capacitance) while consuming very low static current (170µa typical). In addition, when the device is in standby mode, the supply current drops to less than 1µA.

The TPS79118 shows about 15µVRMS of output voltage noise with 0.1µF of bypass capacitance. Applications with noise-sensitive analog components, such as portable RF electronics, benefit from high PSRR and low noise characteristics as well as fast response times.

Overview

The TPS791 device is a high PSRR, low noise, 100 ma linear voltage regulator (LDO). The device's fast startup time and excellent load and line transient behavior make the TPS791 an ideal solution for signal RF and signal chain applications.

The table below shows the recommended values for this capacitor at several resistance ratios. If this capacitor is not used (as in the unit-gain configuration) or if the output voltage < 1.8V is selected, the recommended minimum output capacitance is 2.2µF instead of 1µF.
