Onsemi has introduced an innovative dual inductance rotating position sensor NCS32100, which convincingly offers high speed and precision. The NCS32100 uses a new patented method for inductive position sensing, making it ideal for deploying fast moving and industrial robot applications.

Although the characteristics of inductive encoders make them very attractive for industrial applications, use cases have historically been limited to low RPM applications where high accuracy is not required. Using more than 20 years of expertise in designing inductive sensors, Onsen combines the reliability of inductive encoders with the high precision and high speed typically found in mid - to high-end optical encoders. Enables the NCS32100 (38 mm sensor) to provide +/-50 arcseconds accuracy at 6,000 RPM. The NCS32100 supports speeds up to 100,000RPM at the expense of some accuracy.

"The NCS32100 provides a simple 'plug and play' solution using firmware that directly outputs absolute position and speed, pre-installed in its integrated microcontroller (MCU)," said Michel De Mey, Vice President of Industrial Solutions at OnSonmax. "The integration of the NCS32100 significantly reduces design time and the need for the number of external components, speeding time to market and enabling a more compact and efficient design."

Several key features of inductive sensors make them ideal for industrial applications. Ambient dust, oil, and temperature and humidity have little impact on their accuracy. The NCS32100 device also has an integrated self-calibration program to resolve mechanical misalignment of the sensor. The high degree of configurability is available for a variety of printed circuit board sensor designs, enabling Oems to configure and differentiate their solutions. The integrated MCU contains non-volatile flash memory and a configurable interface to communicate with the main processor.
