NXP Semiconductors announced the launch of a new S32K39 series of automotive microcontrollers (MCUs), which are optimized for electric vehicle (EV) control applications. The high-speed and high-resolution control of the new generation S32K39 MCU can improve energy efficiency and provide a smoother electric vehicle driving experience while extending the driving range to meet future electrification needs.

The network, information security and functional security of S32K39 MCU exceed that of traditional automobile MCU, and can meet the requirements of regional automobile E/E architecture and software defined automobile. With the help of new MCU, NXP's battery management system (BMS) and electric vehicle functional inverter can provide end-to-end solutions for the next generation of electric vehicles.

S32K39 high-performance MCU is optimized to achieve intelligent and high-precision control of traction inverter, which can convert direct current of electric vehicle battery into alternating current to drive modern traction motor. The series MCU supports both traditional insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) and new silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) technologies. The S32K39 high performance MCU improves energy efficiency with dual 200 kHz control loops, smaller, lighter, more efficient inverters and longer driving range.

The series controls six-phase motors to improve power density and fault tolerance and maintain long-term high reliability. In addition, the series features secure ASIL D soft decoding and integrated sine wave generator and sigma-δADC, eliminating the need for external components and reducing system costs. When combined with the NXP S32E real-time processor, the S32K39 also allows for flexible control of up to four traction inverters and the ability to implement advanced traction functions for 4-wheel-drive electric vehicles with this configuration.

The S32K39 series uses a versatile architecture, so in addition to traction inverter control, it is suitable for many other EV applications, including battery management (BMS), on-board charging (OBC), and DC/DC conversion. Hardware isolation, time-sensitive networking, and advanced encryption are also supported, and are fully prepared to support software-defined vehicle and regional architectures.

"The S32K39 MCU integrates multiple advanced technologies to provide automakers with tremendous flexibility and scalability to accelerate the development of electric vehicles and the deployment of new technologies for electrification," said Allan Mcauslin, Director of NXP Semiconductor Automotive Control and electrification. "With a comprehensive portfolio of complementary solutions, NXP is leading the industry to provide customers with a better electric vehicle driving experience while accelerating the electric vehicle revolution."
