Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. announced that it has added more than 100uF capacitance to its GRM series of 1206 and 1210 size monolithic ceramic capacitors (MLCC).
As the functionality of electronic devices becomes more advanced and the available housing space becomes more and more restricted, the demand for capacitors that are both small and large-capacity is increasing. Traditionally, polymer capacitors have been used above 100 uF because there is no such high capacitance value. MLCCs have better ESR characteristics than polymer capacitors and are more compact, so higher values are now available, and MLCCs can help reduce overall space.
The GRM series 1206 adds 150uF and 220uF capacitors. Both have a rated voltage of 6.3V. The slightly larger 1210 size adds 330uF MLCC to the series with a rated voltage of 4V. All three new devices feature M (+ / 20%) deviation ratings and X5R temperature characteristics, resulting in no more than +/- 15% change in capacitance over a temperature range of -55C to + 85C.
Typical applications include low-voltage rail decoupling for use in programmable logic and processors (for example, servers, networking, and data communications infrastructure).
