Linear Technology Corporation introduced the single-chip flyback regulator LT8304, which greatly simplifies the design of isolated DC-DC converters. By sampling the isolated output voltage directly from the primary-side flyback waveform, the device can be adjusted without an opto-isolator or third winding. The LT8304 operates from an input voltage range of 3V to 100V, has a 2A / 150V integrated DMOS power switch, and provides output power up to 24W, making it ideal for a variety of telecommunications, data communications, automotive, industrial, medical, and military application. The device operates in boundary mode, which is a variable frequency current mode control switching scheme that typically produces ± 5% output voltage regulation across the entire line, load, and temperature range. Compared with the equivalent continuous conduction mode design, the boundary mode can use a smaller transformer. The output voltage can be easily set via two external resistors and the transformer turns ratio. Several off-the-shelf transformers listed in the data sheet can be used for a variety of applications. The use of highly integrated and low ripple BurstMode® operation provides an easy-to-use, low component count and efficient solution for isolated power delivery. Other features include output short-circuit protection, 116µA no-load quiescent current, precise enable and undervoltage lockout with hysteresis, internal soft-start and loop compensation, and output diode temperature compensation.
