JAI unveils new Sony Pregius S sensor

JAI announced the expansion of the Go-X series of compact machine vision cameras with 24 new global shutter models featuring Sony's latest Pregius S CMOS sensor. The new model has two interface types, 12 models are equipped with CoaXPress 2.0 interface, and the other 12 models are equipped with GigE Vision (1000BASE-T) interface. In addition, 12 models with GigE Visio interface and support for 5GBASE-T speed will be launched later this year.

The Pregius S sensor features a back-illuminated technology that supports smaller pixel sizes without sacrificing sensitivity. JAI applies this technology to provide customers with higher resolution options while still retaining the compact size of the Go-X series cameras. The current models of the Go-X series support resolutions ranging from 2.3 million to 12.3 million pixels, while the new models have expanded to 24.5 million pixels. Thanks to a pixel size of 2.74 µm, the new 24.5-megapixel camera of the Go-X series is comparable in size to other models, also 29mm x 29mm, and is compatible with the 1.2" optical format of C-mount lenses. It just depends on the type of interface , the new models are available in lengths ranging from 51.5mm to 55mm.

The resolution of the new model is:

• 5.1 million pixels (2472 x 2064 pixels)

• 8.1 million pixels (2856 x 2848 pixels)

• 12.4 million pixels (4128 x 3008 pixels)

• 16.2 million pixels (5328 x 3040 pixels)

•  20.3 million pixels (4512 x 4512 pixels)

• 24.5 million pixels (5328 x 4608 pixels)

There are two different interfaces for each resolution, and both monochrome and color models are available. Color models provide raw Bayer output with RGB output based on the camera's built-in interpolation algorithm capabilities. Output formats include 8/10/12-bit monochrome output, 8/10/12-bit Bayer output and 24/30/36-bit RGB output.

                                               

The Go-X series previously only had cameras with GigE Vision and USB3 Vision interfaces, and now 12 models with CoaXPress interface add a third interface option to the Go-X series. These CoaXPress cameras are designed for applications that require higher resolution and faster frame rates, while still maintaining a small body size and lower price. They are configured with a CXP-6 interface that supports 6.25Gbps of bandwidth, with speeds ranging from 24 fps for 24.5 megapixels to 112 fps for 5.1 megapixels.

The 12 new models of GigE Vision are very popular in the machine vision industry because they can connect multiple cameras to the network and do not need to connect capture cards. Limited by the interface's 1Gbps speed, the camera operates at speeds ranging from 4 fps for 24.5 megapixels to 23 fps for 5.1 megapixels. For customers who need both the convenience and flexibility of the GigE Vision standard, but also higher frame rates, JAI has added "Xpress" lossless compression to the new GigE Vision monochrome model. The Xpress compression algorithm encodes excess image information, reducing the data size output by the camera, after which the image is completely reconstructed in software on the host processor. The amount of compression achievable with the newer models varies by scenario, but data volume is typically reduced by 30%. This can increase frame rates by at least 40%, or allow multiple cameras to share limited bandwidth with this technology.

Both CoaXPress and GigE Vision models can be powered and triggered via the data interface or a single 6-pin connector.

All new models also feature a flexible "Xscale" pixel size scaling feature. Xscale is an alternative to traditional pixel binning. Traditional binning is limited to "whole" pixels like 2x1, 2x2, 4x4, etc. And Xscale supports the use of floating point numbers to re-segment virtual pixels, helping to match pixel size, optical format and resolution when replacing old cameras. Also, traditional merging is limited to monochrome cameras, while Xscale works with monochrome, Bayer, and RGB formats. Xscale supports independent scaling in both horizontal and vertical directions, which can enlarge the new camera's 2.74µm pixel size by 16 times.

The existing Go-X series of GigE Vision and USB3 Vision cameras has a total of 24 models. With the addition of the new models, the total number of models in the series has increased to 48 models. All Go-X series cameras are shock and vibration resistant (80G/10G) as well as excellent heat dissipation to avoid failure in regular industrial environments and uninterrupted working conditions. Both the new model and the original model come with a six-year warranty.
