Intersil has introduced two new single-channel DC-DC step-down power modules that provide high power density and efficiency up to 95% in a compact 4.5mm x 7.5mm x 1.85mm footprint. The pin-compatible 5A ISL8205M and 3A ISL8202M provide point-of-load (POL) conversion batteries for a wide range of home networks and high-end consumer products, as well as FPGAs, DSPs and MCUs in portable industrial equipment using lithium-ion. These modules are complete power supplies that include controllers, MOSFETs, inductors, and passive components inside the packaged module, simplifying system design. The ISL8205M and ISL8202M have a height of 1.85mm and can be mounted directly on the back of the PCB, freeing up valuable space for top-mounted components. Both devices support input voltages from 2.6V to 5.5V and provide adjustable output voltages as low as 0.6V. Pin compatibility allows engineers to start with 3A power modules and then migrate to higher 5A output currents or design power trees with multiple POL output rails. For battery-powered applications, the ISL8205M and ISL8202M provide unique efficiency and energy-saving features to extend battery life and support EnergyStar®-compliant products. Optional light load efficiency, 100% duty cycle mode and 50µA quiescent current enable higher efficiency and reduced power consumption at light loads. Both power modules utilize Intersil's patented technology and advanced packaging to provide high power density and excellent thermal performance. The copper lead frame structure allows the module to operate at full load over a wide temperature range without airflow or heat sinks. The company said that the ISL8205M and ISL8202M also provide a variety of protection features to ensure safe operation under abnormal operating conditions, thereby further enhancing its robustness and reliability.
