Infineon Announces Fifth Generation CAPSENSE™ Technology

Technology Cover
Post-datum: 2022-06-09, Infineon Technologies

Infineon Technologies AG has released the fifth generation of CAPSENSE™ capacitive and inductive touch-sensitive Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology. Next-generation CAPSENSE solutions integrated into PSoC™ microcontrollers deliver enhanced performance and lower power consumption for demanding user interfaces such as home appliances, industrial, consumer and IoT products. Enhanced HMIs improve detection range, gesture detection and pointing capabilities, and include hover detection for future advanced touchscreens, enabling advanced solutions such as proximity sensing.

The performance of the new generation of CAPSENSE technology is ten times that of previous generations, and the power consumption is only one-tenth of previous generations. Low power requirements for networked devices. The new CAPSENSE is ideal for smart door locks, smart switches, thermostats, smart speakers, power tools, industrial touchscreens and many other home appliances, industrial applications, and other IoT devices. The new technology is also well suited for industrial and household appliances such as induction cookers, washers and dryers, refrigerators, and ovens with larger touch screens.

Steve Tateosian, Vice President of the IoT Computing and Wireless Business Unit at Infineon, said: "As the leader in capacitive touch sensing technology with nearly 4 billion shipments, we are delighted to offer engineers the fifth generation of CAPSENSE technology. The next generation of CAPSENSE technology Combines our existing leading technologies with new ratiometric and differential sensing architectures to provide better noise immunity and a robust and reliable HMI solution, even in harsh environments such as extreme power supply noise, extreme weather and temperature can also play a role.”

Infineon's patented CAPSENSE technology enables engineers to develop more advanced human-machine interfaces for future devices that meet the needs of a variety of touch-sensitive user interfaces. With ultra-low power consumption and strong adaptability to smaller form factors, this technology is also ideal for touch interfaces for wearables, hearables and smart IoT applications. Next-generation CAPSENSE technology improves detection range, gesture detection, and pressure-sensing capabilities, enabling advanced HMI solutions such as proximity sensing. The technology also features a new autonomous sensing mode that operates without CPU operation, which can significantly reduce power consumption, while a new ratiometric sensing architecture and differential signal path improve noise immunity and performance.
