Diodes introduced the new IC PAM8906 driver to meet increased demand for Piezo Sounder output. The driver features an integrated synchronous boost converter that provides a louder pressure level (SPL) to allow sound to travel longer distances. The drive is also integrated with features that extend battery-powered operation. Key applications include smoke/gas/water alarms, air humidifiers, handheld GPS units, industrial safety alarms, medical devices and appliances.
The PAM8906 is packaged in a 10-pin MSOP package and has three output voltages: 20VPP, 24VPP and 36VPP. This allows you to create different versions of the output for the same system. Unlike charge-pump-based alternatives, the device maintains output even as the battery voltage drops over time. Operate in external pulse width modulated (PWM) input or in self-excited mode, while other solutions usually support only one mode.
This advantage provides greater application flexibility and supports a wider variety of buzzers. Its boost converter uses a small 0.47µH inductor with a fixed switching frequency of 1.8MHz. This provides engineers with a solution to dramatically reduce board space, as well as reduce bill of Materials (BOM). It has low static current (< 1µA) and automatic shutdown/wake up function to help extend operating time for battery-powered applications
