BFE that optimizes battery life and prevents catastrophic failure

Technology Cover
Post-datum: 2022-06-01, Renesas Electronics America

The Renesas RAA489206 16-cell battery front end (BFE), provided by Mouser, provides accurate monitoring of battery voltage, temperature, and load current to manage the overall state of the battery pack, a differential multiplexer and a 16-bit ADC. Complete this scan to optimize battery life and prevent catastrophic failures. And it is a critical component of any battery management system, regularly scanning the battery status and operating environment.

Typical application areas include light-duty electric vehicles such as electric bicycles, electric scooters and electric motorcycles; home appliances; 24V, 36V, 42V, 48V portable battery packs; wireless power and garden tools; telecommunications and server farms; solar farms; also There is an energy storage system.

BFE supports I2C, SPI, and SPI W /CRC protocols, enabling customers to connect MCU in a proprietary battery management solution. The average IDLE mode current is 200µA and the SHIP mode current is less than 18µA, which maximizes the storage and discharge life of the battery string. The device has an internal battery balancing circuit that provides a balanced current of 8mA per cell. External battery balancing for higher current is also supported. The 16-section high voltage BFE IC comes in a high efficiency 64 Ld QFN package with heat sink pads.
