A single chipset provides wireless charging and communication capabilities

LAPIS Technologies, a ROHM Group of companies, has developed a chipset that provides up to 1W wireless power for compact, streamlined wearables and industrial intelligent, miniaturized and sealed solutions. The ML7661(transmitter) and ML7660(receiver) achieve the smallest class 1W system size in the industry by eliminating the need for external MCU by including a transmission/receive control circuit. That makes it ideal for wearables with large battery capacities. Typical products include wristband blood pressure monitors, smartwatches, fitness trackers and hearing AIDS. In addition, the adoption of a 13.56MHz high band allows NFC support.

Providing wireless power and communication in a single chipset improves design flexibility for devices where rotary mechanisms are typically limited by wired designs, such as industrial equipment, PC cooling fans and electric bicycle torque sensors.

In recent years, there has been a growing need to improve the safety of small electronic products, especially small medical devices, against electric shocks. Wireless power eliminates the need for power cords and greatly improves safety when charging or sweating by adding water, dust, and (electrically) shock resistance to the sealed case. However, while the Qi standard is widely used and can deliver up to 15W of power, the size of the system, including the chipset and antenna, is also often large, making it difficult to integrate into wearable devices.

The company has developed the ML763x chipset, which uses the 13.56MHz band to provide 200mW power and allow wireless communication. But despite the product's popularity in the market, there have been requests for increased power to support wearable devices with large battery capacities like wristband blood pressure monitors, smartwatches and hearing AIDS. Its latest chipset meets this need, offering up to 1W of power capacity in a compact form factor, extending the range of applications.

There is an evaluation kit that makes it easy to start evaluating the new 13.56MHz wireless power chipset right away.

Typical applications include wearables, including smart glasses/watches; Rotating equipment includes cooling fans, electric bike torque sensors. And medical wearable devices below level 2, such as hearing AIDS and wristband sphygmomanometers.
